Perth – The Asbestos Capital of Australia

Perth is known as the asbestos capital of not only Australia, but of the world. With almost every home built before 1987 containing asbestos. Even after a ban was put on for Asbestos Mining in Australia is the mid 1980’s. Asbestos was still allowed to be legally supplied and installed until 31st of December 2003.

The most shocking statistic is that approximately 98% of residents in Perth are within 1km of Asbestos material.

With the exception of the newer suburbs (first build in the last 10 years) no suburb in Perth has been declared ‘ASBESTOS FREE”. The Asbestos Capital tag has hindered sales in certain suburbs, with buyers requesting all asbestos to be removed prior to settlement.

Almost every street in Perth has building, demolition or renovations being undertaken. More often than not, its the neighbouring houses that are at the greatest risk of airborne dangers associated with asbestos.
