Asbestos Dumped in Lane-way near Primary School
Asbestos dumped again, this time right next to a primary school.
Approximately 8 tonnes of broken asbestos was dumped in a lane way early Friday morning, putting lives at risk for residence, local businesses and children.
The St George and Sutherland local shire newspaper reports
“Police were alerted and cordoned off the laneway.
A spokesperson from the City of Canterbury Bankstown Council said the waste was dumped overnight in the residential area, which is less than 500 metres from Yagoona Public School.
“Approximately eight tonnes of fibro asbestos cement sheeting was dumped,” the spokesperson said.
The council said it had “commissioned a contractor to safely remove the asbestos”.
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and the council are investigating who is responsible.
“[We are] talking to witnesses and securing potential surveillance footage as evidence,” the council said.
Airborne asbestos is a health hazard and the maximum penalty for an individual for wilfully dumping asbestos-contaminated waste is a $1 million fine and/or seven years in jail, while the maximum fine for a corporation is $5 million, the EPA said.”
Illegal dumping of asbestos is rampant nation wide. Asbestos dumped in Perth bushland, parks and quiet back streets is a weekly occurrence. The Roe 8 project uncovered a huge amount of asbestos dumped throughout the work site which is being dealt with by WORKSAFE WA.
The cost of correct disposal of asbestos in Perth has risen consistently over the past years. With the prices set to rise again, it is unfortunate to think that illegal dumping will become more and more common, as struggling business attempt to save money where ever they can.
The EPA state “maximum penalty for an individual for wilfully dumping asbestos-contaminated waste is a $1 million fine and/or seven years in jail, while the maximum fine for a corporation is $5 million”.
